Dive into the beauty of spring as I guide you through the creation of a vibrant flower collage. This video shows my intricate process of collage making. You will see me arranging special patterns and shapes I created that have been screen printed and or linoleum block printed on. I had a wonderful time teaching a social justice art workshop to young people in Santa Rosa with @dalesoco ! I always love teaching young people how art can be a powerful tool in changing hearts and minds and in building the public will for change. These incredible youth are working on projects throughout Sonoma County about food security, homelessness, school supplies for youth immigrant rights and on demanding a ceasefire. Thank you to @nikkokimzin @dr.danieladominguez , Gricelda and the entire DALE staff! Thank you Santa Rosa for welcoming me to your community! DALE’s program seeks to strengthen student skills, bring together leaders and community organizers who are committed to educational justice in our high schools, and co-create a pipeline of youth organizers and leaders in Sonoma County. I am available in the Fall to do workshops and keynotes. Ping me!

An Earth Month reminder that we are a part of nature and it’s important to slow down. This new print symbolizes the need to slow down in a culture that is always pushing us to move fast. It serves as a reminder that creating meaningful change requires a regenerative relationship to time, as well as a shift in how we create, collaborate, and navigate the unrealistic standards we set for ourselves and others because of capitalism. By slowing down, we are able to connect with our bodies, with each other, and to reject old paradigms in order to open our hearts for different ways of being. I love our planet and that’s why I fight to protect it for future generations. This was captured on camera for the first time. Penguin chicks usually jump from 1-2 feet cliffs but climate crisis has changed that. Shared from @abcworldnewstonight Captured on camera for the first time ever, hundreds of six-month-old emperor penguin chicks were filmed taking a leap of faith off of a 50-foot cliff in Antarctica. @whitjohnsontv shares the rare moment, which was filmed by a @natgeo team.

It’s Earth Month and it’s an important time to remind everyone that salmon and humans have an interconnected relationship! “What happens to the salmon happens to us,” shares Chief Caleen Sisk of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe. This artwork honors our deep connection with the Coho Salmon, a symbol of California’s ecological heritage. Chief Caleen Sisk of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe reminds us that the fate of the salmon reflects our own, emphasizing the intertwined relationship between humans and nature. Once abundant in the waterways of central and northern California, Coho Salmon populations plummeted in the 20th century, particularly in the Bay Area. Despite this decline, there is hope. Thanks to the dedication of Native communities and conservationists, endangered salmon are now making a remarkable comeback in Bay Area streams. Through initiatives focused on restoring river habitats and advocating for dam removal, these efforts signal a promising resurgence for the Coho Salmon and our shared ecosystem. #interconnected #earthday #oceanconservation #riverconservation #salmonprotection #salmonart #protectfish

It’s Earth Month, and it’s a good time to remind you that the land does not belong to us, we belong to the land! In order for us to solve the climate crisis, we must work to liberate the land for ALL people. When we say “free the land”, we mean free it ALL. Liberate the gardens! Liberate the forests! Liberate the cities! Liberating the Land also means that we don’t destroy, bomb, or violate the land. Land is sacred. This art celebrates Indigenous efforts to rematriate the land and return it to the stewardship of Indigenous people, such as the work led by Sogorea Te’ Land Trust, an urban Indigenous women-led nonprofit rooted in the East Bay. The phrase “Free the Land” has its roots with the New Afrikan Independence Movement which called for an independent Black nation on the North American continent. To “Free the Land” means to support Black land reparations. Shout out to my friends @MovementGeneration who have inspired my climate activism and who have taught me about movements to Free The Land!

Greetings from Oxford, England! I’m having a really amazing time at the School World Forum @skollworldforum . My heart is full! I am reconnecting with old friends, meeting so many new leaders and change makers from around the globe who are working to transform the world to a place where more justice, freedom and sustainability exist. I love England, I am hoping I can spend more time here in the future and make some art! Oh and @liladowns made my heart explode today!! So grateful that I can represent my powerful organization, the Center for Cultural Power @culturestrike at this event.

NEW ART! I recently got to spend an extended amount of time in the beautiful Sonoran desert. I fell in love with the region we call Tucson today. Since 2011, I have been traveling to the borderlands in Arizona to join pro-immigrant movements and to stand against the devastating wall. The border wall has been an awful barrier that was erected in 1994, and it has only gotten deadlier for humans and animals alike. Those who fund and support the devastating border wall will lead us to believe that the desert is a dead region, but nothing could be farther from the truth. The desert is a vibrant ecosystem. There are many plants and animals that are harshly impacted by the border wall. Therefore, when I’m in Tucson, I look to celebrate the desert and all that is alive in it. Recently I was invited to create an art piece at the University of Arizona. I made an art installation about desert plants and creatures that are special to the region, and that are also impacted by militarization, habitat loss and climate change. One of those plants that I especially loved is the Peniocereus greggii, also known as the Saramatraca - Night Blooming Cereus. Sonoran Desert dwellers know how special it is to observe the night blooming cereus’s rare, luminous, and fragrant flowers. Legend says that the cactuses all bloom a single night of the year. In fact, they bloom in three to five night-time flushes per year, between late May and early July: cactuses near to one another all flower in synchrony. At other times of the year, the plant is less noticeable, and a large portion of it is underground in the form of a tuber. This limited edition print honors that sacred Saramatraca. This paper has special patterns and shapes I created that have been screen printed and or linoleum block printed on. After I am done cutting the shapes I want, I arrange where I want them to go. Once I am pleased with my arrangement, the many cut elements get pinned down then glued. This piece is part of a series that is inspired by my five-year journey nurturing my garden into a flourishing sanctuary. Making these flower arrangement collages is very similar to making physical flower bouquets but with these collages the flowers last forever! Shared from @theslowfactory - The targeted attacks on the World Central Kitchen were attacks on a network of humanitarian aid delivering, in coalition, millions of meals to Palestinians in Gaza who are surviving an illegal siege and violent genocide. This attack has gotten worldwide attention in the media, and while we condemn this vicious attack and mourn the lives of these brave souls, the martyrs are European, Canadian and American folks, which begs the questions as to why this would get more coverage than Palestinians in Gaza itself, and appears to demonstrate yet another bias of Western Media– reporting behind a racist and dehumanizing lens. The murder of humanitarian aid workers is a crime against humanity. The murder of an entire population of people is a crime against humanity. The only solution to these inhumane conditions is for an immediate ceasefire to be imposed as well as an immediate lift of the siege, allowing for the thousands of trucks to reach the starving people of Gaza. Ceasefire is definitely not enough, we call for the end of the occupation and a free Palestine.

This vibrant spring series celebrates the enchanting beauty of flowers, inspired by my five-year journey nurturing my garden into a flourishing sanctuary. Through this experience, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the vital role flowers play in attracting pollinators and signaling the arrival of new beginnings. For me, spring embodies a season of personal growth and renewal, like the blooming of a flower. As winter fades away, I embrace introspection and reflection, paving the way for fresh ideas and decisive actions in the spring. This is a lifelong lesson that I’ve been normalizing for myself: to listen to my body. I grew up with immigrant parents who had a very strong work ethic out of necessity, and they would rarely prioritize rest. I was encouraged since childhood to be highly productive and to be the best at everything. Being great at everything, of course, requires tremendous sacrifice. Throughout my teens, college, and well into my thirties, I pushed my body to its limits. The words of my parents, “sleep when you die,” were etched into my imagination. Through my own decolonization and healing work, I learned that the myth of “productivity” is harmful, and that capitalism pushes that narrative while not promoting rest, recovery, and overall slowing down. I am naturally a very energetic person and I love the things I do, but I am also releasing the habits of self-exploitation, learning how to become attuned to what my body needs and wants and to create pleasurable periods of rest for myself. This art piece is about honoring the messages that my body gives to me. My body lets me know when it’s time to rest. It lets me know who the right people are for me.
