My collaboration with Old Navy

Favianna Rodriguez

"My design is about friendship, connection and celebrating our culture."

I’m thrilled to announce that I’m launching a new tee shirt design in collaboration with Old Navy for Project WE, a new series that celebrates the visions of diverse artists. I am 1 of 3 artists who created a tee to celebrate Latinx heritage. My design is about friendship, connection and celebrating our culture, especially during this key moment in history when people are craving support and mutual aid from their communities more than ever. I grew up in an immigrant Peruvian family in Oakland, in a predominantly Mexican and Central American immigrant neighborhood. So much of my inspiration as a child came from witnessing the various cultures from Turtle Island – today known as South America. As a young artist, I loved the many cultural icons and art that I would see in the many homes I would visit, this eventually shaped my visual language.

In this design, I depict two people who are working together to create a future that is inclusive of more voices and experience, to create an expansive understanding of our culture and history. The rainbow symbolizes the beauty that emerges when different colors and stories come together. Please grab one of these shirts for you, your family and the kids in your life! Thanks for supporting this project. I’m super excited to be part of this, along with two other amazing artists Manuela Guillén and Ruby Marquez.

Throughout the next few days, I’ll be showing some inspiration behind my piece as well as different parts of my creative process.
