Markham Elementary Mural

"I had such a beautiful transformative experience with these bright young folks."

I’m happy to announce that I am designing a mural for Markham Elementary School in East Oakland! I’ll be collaborating with Project Backboard, Trust for Public Land, Green Schoolyards and Warriors Community Foundation. Markham is 1 of 5 schools to serve as demonstration sites where asphalt covered schoolyards will be transformed into green living schoolyards that cool hot asphalt and absorb rain water, thus improving the local watershed.

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of visiting Markham Elementary school and conducting a collage workshop with kids there to explore some of their aesthetic ideas for the design. I had such a beautiful transformative experience with these bright young folks. I am honored that I get to design a space for my community that can bring joy and nature to their everyday lives AND! that this collaboration is also climate-justice-informed.

I can’t wait to share the final design!
